The art of Sofia Caligiuri magically transport us to her native Calabria, that has inspired so many of her paintings and writings.  Calabria, with its rich colors and many mysteries, provided her with the basic elements that would shape her art, to which she turned at a very early age, only later pursuing a formal education at the Accademia di Belle Arti and studying etching at the Istituto di Calcografia in Rome.  Sofia Caligiuri received also a Master Itals in “Didattica della Lingua Italiana a Stranieri” at the Universita` Ca’Foscari in Venice.

Always in search of new means of expression, Caligiuri also explored film and television and became well-versed in their manifold artistic possibilities.  She worked as a scenery and costume designer for a number of film and television productions.  In addition, Caligiuri produced and directed documentaries, the last one on the motivations and difficulties in the acquisition of the Italian language in the elderly, and published two books : “The Fief, a story of love and other virtues” and “The little Novels” both for ARTEMIDE EDIZIONI .

She taught Italian at The Catholic University of America in Washington D.C., at the University of Maryland and  at Sherwood High School, Olney MD.
